How I work

Nine product pillars — the questions I bring to every organization, and the operating disciplines I put in place to answer them.

The North Star. Help create, document and visualize the product vision over one, three and five years — because we need to know where we're going before we can set the right path, and everyone needs to be aligned to it.

Set the plan to get there, with roadmaps and milestones that make sure we hit the North Star. I generally start from industry-standard frameworks like RICE and expand them for the situation.

Realistic roadmaps at every level — from high-level executive roadmaps to development planning roadmaps with dependencies and velocity tracking.

Create or mature the most impactful product process for the stage of the business — user-centered, data-driven, fast, and high quality from research through QA.

The entire process is evolving with the AI tools now at our disposal, and it has to include the collaborating teams: customer success, marketing and growth.

Identify the key success metrics, short and long term, and align them to the company operating system. Build them into the process so we know when we're winning or losing.

Real-time dashboards that deliver the right BI metric to the right person. Simple and accurate beats broad and complex.

Craft or mature a product organization set up for success and career development, and act as the servant leader to it. Team-based or matrix depends on strategy; helping individuals see their career path is key to alignment and culture.

Dedicated and support teams, using a mix of full-time staff and contractors.

Plan a scaling path in partnership with engineering so the business can grow quickly, creating automated, repeatable processes along the way. Building for scale is part of the mindset of the whole product and engineering team.

Communicating up and down the chain is key to alignment and inspiration. Leadership gets KPI updates and board decks; the company gets monthly all-hands and live product decks; customers get product updates and webinars.

Optimize communication without meetings, but rally the team when it's needed. Live product dashboards and roadmaps mean anyone can see where we are and how we're progressing.

Lead product marketing so the product narrative is aligned with sales goals — designing and building a product that sells itself, and helping the marketing team with the sales narrative.

Own the technology P&L to manage ROI on every product and development effort. Managing budget, spend and investment is table stakes; using ROI hypothesis data to drive feature prioritization is where it gets interesting.
